Este es el segundo libro que leo de Joe Hill tras “Cuernos” y tengo que reconocer que me gusta como escribe, tanto como su padre, todo sea dicho. Y una de las cosas que me gustan, aparte de las frikeces en forma de mil referencias a cómics, series, libros y sagas que compartimos, es que, por ejemplo en este libro, comparte universo literario con su padre y aparte de referencias al cabrón de Pennywyse y las cosas que “flotan”, el villano de esta historia conoce a los villanos de “Doctor Sueño” y tanto Charles Max, como el “Nudo Verdadero” de la mencionada secuela de “El Resplandor”, tienen una ocupación no demasiada diferente.

Victoria McQueen es una niña con una habilidad especial y unos padres disfuncionales. Vic encuentra cosas perdidas. Se monta en su bici atraviesa un puente cubierto que ya no existe y aparece en donde está lo que sea que este buscando. A lo largo de los años lo hace unas cuantas veces y conoce a un par de personas mas con habilidades parecidas, una bibliotecaria tartamuda que sabe cosas porque se lo dicen las fichas de scrabble y a Charles Manx, un viejo decrepito que puede viajar a un lugar imaginado por él a bordo de un Roll Royce Wraith de 1938 con la matricula NOS4A2.

Manx viaja a Christmasland, y lo suele hacer con niños a los que secuestra y ayudado por un degenerado tipo con una mascara de gas que dispone de las madres de los niños secuestrados a su antojo. Vic y Manx se encuentran cuando esta atraviesa su adolescencia y el enfrentamiento es definitorio para ambos.

Han pasado los años, Vic aparte de carne de psiquiátrico y politoxicomanías, es madre de un niño al que ella y su frikoso padre han llamado Bruce (Wayne  de segundo nombre) y Manx que lleva años en la cárcel y en coma, despierta y ahora querrá llevarse al hijo de Vic a Christmasland.

Tremenda novela. La he disfrutado mucho y alcanza cotas de sordidez muy enfermizamente disfrutables, aparte de las frikeces continuas, desde cómics de DC hasta cosas solo entendibles por Browncoats , pasando por juego de tronos, Lovecraft a través de su mismo “Locke & Key”, cosas de libros de su padre, etc… Me gusta como escribe este tipo y me gusta lo mal que está de la cabeza.

Muy recomendable y por cierto, ya que también es guionista de cómics, hay una precuela en 6 grapas de IDW titualda “The Wraith” recién terminada, que va a publicar Planeta DeAgostini dentro de poco.

  1. Joe Hill es un autor que me encanta. Descubrí primero su faceta de guionista de cómics con la increíble “Lock & Key”. Después leí “Heart-shaped box” (El traje del muerto), que no está nada mal, continué con “Cuernos” (Horns) y con otro cómic, “The Cape”. Debe de haber heredado algo del padre…

    • Y yo todavía sin haber leído “Locke & Key”. Lo tengo eternamente en pendientes y ya va siendo hora de saldar esa deuda con el señor Hill
