No se puede decir que no lo haya intentado. Como estamos a un par de semanas del estreno de la película y parece que no lo ha hecho nada mal en taquilla, me he propuesto echarle un ojo al libro del que viene y he llegado al 20% y ahí ya lo he dejado. Vale que tengo el arroz ya pasado para el genero “young adult”, pero el componente distópico me hacía albergar esperanzas y al fin y al cabo el primer libro de “Los Juegos del Hambre” me pareció bastante majo.

No digo que sea una puta mierda, solo digo que no soy su publico objetivo y no me ha vendido nada la autora en un 20% de lectura como para querer seguir. Frases cortísimas, ninguna variedad en el lenguaje, nula descripción y al fin y al cabo, estar dentro de la cabeza de una chica de 16 años bastante alelada, no es la forma en la que yo hubiera podido disfrutar de la ambientación distópica que se plantea.

Tercera y última parte de la precuela a la saga de Arturo de M.K. Hume. Mas denso que los anteriores, mas duro, mas crudo, mas oscuro y definitivamente mas triste. Lejos han quedado los viajes de Myrddion en la segunda parte y aquí volvemos a Britania para caer directamente en manos de Úter Pendragon y por asociación, del emperador Ambrosio.

Pasaremos de la personalidad de Ambrosio como freno a la psicopatía de su hermano Uter, a tener a este ya como rey de todos los Britanos, dando rienda suelta a su sangrienta manera de ser, pero atado a Myrddion y este a él, por el juramente hecho por ambos en el lecho de muerte de Ambrosio.

Saga Profecia de Merlin

Pocos resquicios para la alegría tenemos aquí, pocas batallas históricas como en los anteriores tomos, pero aun así, es un camino hacia la oscuridad de la mano de Uter Pendragon y el rastro de muerte y miseria que va dejando entre todo aquel que tiene la mala fortuna de llamar su atención. No voy a negar que, unido a mi animo negro de estos días, me ha dejado con bastante mal cuerpo.

Aprovechando que esta semana se publicaba el tercer volumen que cierra esta saga precuela de la saga artúrica de la misma autora, me he puesto con la segunda parte para poder leerlos seguidos. Y es que tengo que reconocer que es muy satisfactoria de leer esta saga.

Es bastante diferente, como es lógico, este segundo libro y es que Myrddion ha decidido junto con sus ayudantes, iniciar viaje hacia el corazón del imperio con el doble objetivo de adquirir conocimientos para mejorar su trabajo como sanador y de buscar la verdad sobre la identidad de su padre.

Básicamente y aparte del hecho de Myrddion y sus ayudantes son ficticios, todo lo demás que encontramos es una descripción bastante amena del fin del imperio romano de occidente durante los 6 años que dura el viaje y todo ello alrededor del año 450.

Dejamos Britania y nos vemos envueltos en la batalla de los campos Cataláunicos, donde Myrddion asiste como medico de campaña para la alianza de reyes Visigodos y del general romano Flavio Aecio que frenó a Atila cerca de Orleans, en lo que fue la primera en la frente que recibía Atila. Así viajaremos por la Galia, hasta Roma, donde pasaremos un tiempo viendo un imperio derrumbarse ante un emperador incapaz como Valentiniano, un enemigo imponente y las traiciones habituales, para luego recalar en Constantinopla, donde importantes revelaciones dejarán al bueno y pardillo de Myrddion marcado para siempre.

Muy entretenido de leer, muy satisfactorio y aunque en el primer libro las descripciones tácticas de las batallas históricas de los Sajones, eran mas cuidadas, aquí encontramos en una escala bastante mayor en cuanto a tropas y movimientos. Son diferentes, pero no por ello menos interesantes de leer, de hecho me lo han parecido mas, así como lo es la descripción de la decadencia de la ciudad eterna y lo exótica que resulta para unos celtas, la capital del imperio romano de oriente. Para cuando os publique esta entrada, ya habré empezado la tercera parte y es que con la oferta de prevenderlos por 5€ en ebook, me he acabado comprando los 3. A ver si mas editoriales aprenden.

Poco se puede decir a estas alturas de Fundación, excepto que aunque todo el mundo lo leyó de chaval, yo nunca le había dado un tiento, precisamente por las expectativas pre creadas y que suelen ser contraproducentes a la hora de leer un libro tan mítico. Vamos que se me ha pasado el arroz de leer Fundación y por eso he tardado tanto en ponerme con ello.

Me ha gustado, no puedo decir que no, pero me ha gustado menos que “Los Propios Dioses“. Así que por el momento lo voy a dejar en 3 estrellas, porque al fin y al cabo ha sido un poco como un entremés de algo mucho mas grande. La estructura de saltos en el tiempo para cada parte, me es incomoda como lo son los libros de relatos, me jode no tener un personaje con el que ir de la mano y andar teniendo varios personajes en varios tiempos. Parece que va todo muy deprisa con el esquema de “momento, problema, resolución”. Aun así, pues como en esta galaxia lo que queda claro es que todos los protagonistas son unos jetas de 3 pares de cojones, pues se va haciendo ameno de leer.

Segundo libro que leo de Ismael Martínez Biurrun, parece que voy a extremos, ya que leí su primera novela “Infierno Nevado” y ahora su ultima, y me he dejado por el medio el resto de sus libros, pero he decir que estos 2 que he leído son los únicos que he podido comprar en digital.

Esta vez pasamos del terror lovecraftiano entre legiones romanas en Navarra para irnos a terror humano de ciencia ficción en un Madrid cercano en el tiempo, pero camino al agujero mas absoluto. No quiero contar apenas nada, porque es mejor no saber que elementos entran en juego en la novela e ir descubriendolos a bofetadas y tras leerla me reafirmo en uno de los adjetivos de este parrafo, que es aparentemente contradictorio.

Tenemos una sociedad que se ha ido al garete por causas que no conocemos. Madrid se divide entre lo que queda dentro o fuera de la M-30, siendo el anillo interior un desesperado intento de mantener algo parecido a la civilización (o a sus rescoldos), mientras que fuera quedan el resto de barrios que están a merced de los ataques de una horda extraña, violenta, caótica y sin objetivo claro, de personas que forman una tribu de gente con camisas Hawaianas.

En esos limites cercanos al orden, pero fuera de la zona segura viven Ciro y Sole con el pequeño Pau. Ciro aun va a trabajar a la universidad, aunque hace meses que no cobra, como tanta otra gente. Mientras sole se queda en casa temiendo un ataque de los muy random hawaianos y cultivando un rencor hacia su marido, del que hace tiempo que le separa una brecha insalvable y viendo como la mayoria de los vecinos de su calle, se marchan de allí.

No cuento mas, pero es muy por encima el argumento inicial de la historia. La parte distópica violenta, y de la parte de ciencia ficción no cuento nada, porque cualquier palabra o referencia mal ponderada, es un spoiler en toda regla. Tengo que decir que me ha gustado bastante por el malrollismo malsano, la opresión vital, la hijoputez y que por algún motivo, no dejaba de imaginármelo todo dibujado en plan anime.. Y no es que yo sea seguidor de anime ni nada, pero ha habido momentos que los veía muy claros, incluida una escena que me ha hecho recordar a Evangelion mientras que otras me traian imagenes de Akira sin ir mas lejos. Disrutable, dentro de la incomodidad de lo que ocurre y de los propios protagonistas. Yo compro una adaptación animada seria sin ningún problema, vamos la veo perfecta para esta historia.

Estaba escuchando por ahí “buenas” cosas de esta primera novela de un tal Donal Ray Pollock (antes publicó un libro de relatos), que así por las buenas y tras pasar media vida trabajando en una planta papelera, le ha dado por ponerse a tirarnos cosas sórdidas a los ojos, pero de esa cierta manera que hace que no apartes la mirada. Suciedad y sordidez del viejo sur, en los años que van entre la resaca de la 2ª Guerra Mundial, hasta el miedo a ser reclutado para Vietnam.

En ese contexto nos encontramos con una primera parte con una sordidez extrema que marca el destino de Arvin Rusell. Este niño hijo de un tipo que vio cosas que nadie debería haber visto en alguna selva perdida de alguna isla del pacifico durante la guerra, ve como su madre enferma, y como según el cáncer se la come por dentro, a su padre se le van aflojando del todo los tornillos que ya empezaron a girar mas de la cuenta en la guerra. Sordidez religiosa y sacrificios, para ir empezando a poner el lector de aquella manera.

A partir de el fin de esa primera parte (de las 7 que componen la novela) las vidas de varias personas irán siguiendo sus caminos mas o menos paralelos o en rumbo de colisión. Pero quizás llamar persona a cierta gente es ser muy generoso. Tenemos desquiciadas religiosas, predicadores follabeatas, predicadores iluminados por la mierda y el whiskey, asesinos en serie con ínfulas artísticas, policías corruptos y una gama de colores desde el grasiento del redneck, al podrido dental del whitetrash mas absoluto. Todo ello con una buena ración de muerte a lo largo del camino.

Muy recomendable como libro enfermo y sórdido, pero que a pesar de ello no se recrea en los detalles mas enfermos, sino que la profunda tara del autor se destila en todo el conjunto sin tener que colgarnos unos intestinos al cuello. Lectura muy recomendada para acompañar al final de True Detective.

Hay que reconocer que la portada llama la atención, si bien ni portada ni titulo se parecen ni en el blanco del ojo, a los originales. Y es que tras este titulo, tremendamente explicativo, nos encontramos con una un thriller policial situado en Islandia y que tiene que ver con un anillo milenario y de maldad latente, que un tal Isildur llevó a Islandia y que renuncio a deshacerse de él en un volcán cercano a su granja y trata de una saga nórdica oculta hasta ahora que cuenta dicha historia y a la que Tolkien tuvo acceso en su día.

Todo esto, lógicamente por el bien de la historia que el autor quiere contar, no porque tenga mucha similitud con la realidad del origen de “El Señor de los Anillos”. El caso es que tenemos a un detective de la policía de Boston, de origen Islandés, que por ciertos motivos, tiene que pasar una temporada en Islandia. Allí ayudará a la policía a esclarecer un asesinato relacionado con el anillo de marras.

Está bien sin mas. Se deja leer a gusto por el asunto de Tolkien, por que en la trama aparecen un par de entusiastas de “El Señor de los Anillos” que buscan hacerse con la Saga de Gurkur original que ha aparecido tras varios siglos oculta, y también por el asunto de leer un poco de Islandia. Pero nada mas. No creo que siga con el resto de libros del detective Magnus Ragnarson en Islandia, y eso que en inglés van 4 libros.

Esta es otra de las recomendaciones de Alcorze en su blog, que con mi criterio aleatorio de cuando leer qué, ha caído entre medias de mi planificación de lecturas, por aquello de poner un poco de terror al estilo japones y por la brevedad del conjunto. Y es que no soy lector de libros de relatos, lo reconozco. Me molesta que se me acaben los personajes demasiado pronto y precisamente eso son los relatos, como gente con cosas interesantes que decir a la que acabas de conocer, pero que se tienen que bajar en la siguiente estación, mientras tu tienes que seguir todo el trayecto del transiberiano. De ahí mi gusto por meterme en sagas largas e ir hasta los infiernos con personajes que ya son parte de mi.

Lo que nos encontramos aquí son 3 historias de terror, aunque no es exactamente la palabra que yo usaría. 3 Historias en las que la mujer tiene un papel determinante a la hora de llevar a la desesperación y al borde de la locura a través de los grotesco a 3 personajes, que se lo merecen. Es como si a modo de castigo divino, en el camino de los tres protagonistas, las fortunas hubieran decidido darles su merecido.

La primera historia es la que da nombre a esta compilación y en ella Sakaguchi nos quita de la cabeza esa imagen idilica de los amigos comiendo bajo los cerezos en flor que tenemos hoy en día, para llevarnos a una época mas oscura, como la de los 3 relatos, en donde el florecimiento de los cerezos, causaba desasosiego a los habitantes de Suzuka. Allí un bandido y asesino, encontrará su propio infierno floral al asesinar a un tipo y secuestrar a su mujer para hacer de ella su séptima esposa.

La segunda historia “La Princesa Yonaga y Mimio“, que ha sido la que mas me ha gustado e incomodado, trata de un joven artesano que es contratado para competir con otros por ver quien hace el buda que mas le guste a la princesa para el dia de su decimosexto cumpleaños, pero como sufre burlas nada mas llegar, Mimio decide emplear su tiempo en crear algo diferente. Maldad infinita condensada en una bella sonrisa y en sola frase “Las cosas que uno ama hay que maldecirlas, matarlas, combatirlas.”

La tercera titulada “El Gran Consejero Murasaki“, es quizás la mas floja y corta, pero sirve para quitar un poco el mal cuerpo que deja la historia anterior y nos presenta a un tipejo que una noche se encuentra una flauta perdida por una doncella de la Luna y a la que se niega a devolvérsela hasta que no pase 5 días con el.

Muy recomendable, y si bien no es terror en el sentido mas común de la palabra, si lo es en el sentido mas japones del termino, mas cercano a lo grotesco de Junji Ito que a lo terrorífico a lo que estamos acostumbrados, pero descrito de una manera cuidada, poética y evocadora, de manera que aunque vayamos de la mano de la muerte y la violencia no deje de ser un paisaje a admirar.

Ya con la carrerilla de leer en inglés los últimos 3 libros, me metí a proseguir la saga de La Piedra de Ward, de la que solo los 3 primeros están en castellano, pero he tropezado con él. Se me ha hecho bastante cuesta arriba el ultimo tramo, que es precisamente el de la resolución, pero al venir directamente de la saga de Dresden, me ha sabido a poco el cambio de mundo y tengo que decir que es el libro que menos me ha gustado de la saga.

Tom está a punto de cumplir 14 años, y va mejorando notablemente como aprendiz del espectro Gregory, pero tal y como sabíamos del final del anterior libro, su siguiente misión los llevaría a Pendle, a lidiar con los clanes de brujas de los que procede Alice y que están tramando algo peligroso.

Y eso es lo que tenemos… brujas chungas con una idea bastante clara de lo que quieren hacer y levantar de la oscuridad. Brujillas mas tipo Alice, osea jóvenes y peligrosas, también tocaran los cojones a Tom. Pero lo mas importante es que aprenderos cosas sobre la madre de Tom, cosas que intuíamos, pero no sabíamos hasta que punto.

Se me ha hecho cuesta arriba, me ha parecido flojo y no voy a ir directo a por el siguiente. Voy a ir dejando tiempo entre libro y libro de la saga, aunque según se acerca el estreno de la película, seguro que me dan ganas de retomarla.

3 Meses faltan hasta que se publique el libro que hará el numero 15 de esta saga y habiéndome leído estas semanas los 3 últimos que me quedaban pendientes, me veo con esa mala sensación de abstinencia, cuando uno quiere seguir leyendo y no puede. Y eso que esta vez ya no voy a calificar de spoileante el titulo del siguiente libro, porque no tengo idea (o no tenia hasta que he ido a leer la sinopsis) de por donde podían ir los tiros.

Retazos

Tras 14 libros, hemos llegado a cotas épicas, las hemos meado en ojo y hemos vuelto mas o menos sanos, pero esta vez épico se queda corto para definir como ampliamos nuestro conocimiento de la “realidad”. Como no quiero spoilear nada, baste saber que todo tiene que ver con los 2 reinos (y las 6 reinas) de los/las Faeri, siendo como estamos nosotros con Harry metidos hasta las cejas en la corte de invierno.

Nada mas tenemos entre manos que el fin de toda existencia en la tierra, vamos que lo de siempre… si algo chungo puede pasar, será lo peor y una vez es absorbente como pocos el libro. Y una vez Jim Butcher vuelve a sorprender, a dejarte con el culo torcido con las implicaciones que no has visto venir ni por asomo y encima disfrutándolo como un idiota.

Soy ya muy fan de Dresden, de sus frikeces, de las mil referencias de Buthcer a toda la cultura pop, de las apariciones de personajes impensables… pero lógicos si tenemos en cuenta que significa la corte de invierno y las chungeces extremas que componen el mismo concepto de realidad. Que sencillos eran aquellos días en que Harry era un simple detective con capacidades extra y que lejanos quedan.
